Background
I’m writing this in the hope that it will reach others who are also alarmed by the climate crisis and want to do something.
The climate crisis is still getting worse: the deadly heatwave in south Asia, global crop failures, melting ice caps, devastating floods, wildfires…yet our government and local councils are still failing to cut carbon emissions, phase out fossil fuels and halt the destruction of nature.
Fossil fuel companies are profiting from both the cost-of-living crisis and the destruction of our planet. (Even the recently announced windfall tax gives them 90% tax relief if they invest in further oil and gas exploration.)
We need to get on streets and raise our voices to demand climate action from those in power.
You may have noticed XR Derby is not as active as it once was. Many of our core members who would arrange meetings, plan protests, do admin, handle emails, social media and other tasks have moved on to other projects and campaigns responding to the climate ecological emergency.
We’re grateful for all that they have contributed and know there are many paths to the building the fairer, healthier world that all life on Earth so desperately needs.
We have been asked: When is the next XR Derby action or protest?
The answer: We need more people to make them happen. It’s up to you what kind of protest we do, just get involved and help make it happen. We’re all crew and a protest is a team effort.
A protest / action typically needs
- A group of people to plan it, come up with a theme, messaging etc.
- Promotion (writing event descriptions, sharing on social media, inviting people and other groups, leafletting etc.)
- Logistics (planning a march route with meeting points, accessibility and inclusivity considerations, getting equipment such as microphones and sound systems, food and drink)
- Photography and filming
- Social media on the day
- Writing press releases
- Spokespeople to give speeches and talk to the press
- Making props and costumes
- Artwork for banners, flags etc
- Volunteers for various roles on the day such as stewards, outreach / leafletting, wellbeing,
If you would like to help make this happen, please consider coming to one of our Zoom meetings….
