Australian Bushfire Protest

Thanks to those of you who took part in Friday’s protest outside the Australian High Commission in London, demanding their government take the climate seriously. We received lots of appreciation from Australians via our social media. Derby Rebels also took part in a three hour drumming protest.

Want to join our Samba band? They meet at West End Community Centre
8:30pm – 10:00pm alternate Wednesdays so the next two are Wed, Jan 22, Wed, Feb 5, beginners welcome.

Strategy

Firstly, please check you’re up to speed on the whole UK strategy, in case you missed the January 1st update see Action Strategy for 2020. The next big rebellion in London will be in the Summer to give us time to mobilise more people and take part in regional protests too.

“This year’s Rebellion will be different. It has to be. Throughout our debrief and reflection process it’s been clear that we need new, more inclusive tactics. We need practised, empowered rebels across the whole of the UK. That’s why we’re building a Mass Mobilisation of ordinary people across the country.” Read more about it here

The horrific fires in Australia have raised the public cry for climate action even higher. In the UK, The Independent published a poll to show it: (Click to enlarge image)

Now is the time to come along to meetings, training and events to get mobilised. Pass on this email.  Tell your friends to join us and if you’ve been having more of those tricky conversations our guide can help: How to Tell the Truth

Meeting for All XR Derby

All members old and new are invited to our group meeting. 17th January, West End Community Centre, Mackworth Rd, 7.30pm-9.30pm.

There will be updates from all the teams, plus some notices and things to discuss which affect all of us, such as our local strategy for 2020, our new structure using something called the self-organising system (SOS), big campaigns we are planning, and how to get more involved in the aspects that interest you most.

XR Derby is too big for anyone to be involved in everything – but at these meetings we will get a bit of an overview of how much is being done.

Please bring cake if you feel moved to do so! 🙂

Hope to see you soon. If you can’t make these dates, all future events will be found on our website at rebellionderby.earth/events and more are planned on Basecamp (see below).

NVDA Training

Part 1 Tuesday 21 January 7pm to 9.30pm

Part 2 Wednesday 22 January 7pm to 9.30pm

Derby Womens Centre, 4 Leopold Street, Derby, DE1 2HE both evenings.

Non-violent Direct Action (NVDA) is the basis of all Extinction Rebellion protests. It is the reason we have been so successful so far. This is essential training for all members taking part in protests. Even if you have no intention of being arrested please do this so you are prepared for protests and we can maintain the discipline of peacefulness. Plenty of actions avoid arrest (but other actions may present it as a risk.) NVDA is required in both. This contains a legal briefing and updated information.

This training will support protests in London at the Summer Rebellion but it is also vital for actions locally.

Please book to ensure you get a place. We do need to know numbers. Everyone is welcome.

Book here.

If you can’t make this at short notice check out this training weekend in Nottingham.

If you’ve already had this training there are a few things you can do to support future protests.

Regenerative Culture

Are you experiencing distress at the climate crisis and biodiversity loss? Come to talk it through in a circle as part of a structured session with trained facilitators from Derby Rebel Projects, XR Derby and Peak XR on Saturday January 25, 1:30 pm till 3.30pm at Friends Meeting House, Derby. See details: Seventh Generation Circle

It will be lead by Keli Mara who will be at the meeting this Friday to tell you more.

Our Regenerative Culture Circle (working group) is also working with Keli to build a list of events hosted by other groups that we can access to improve our resilience and support.
